Question:
Who should be the "first defender" during a game? and why?
Hint: The question is not really about who is our best defender. It is more about in any situation during a game (forward, mid or back), which person is responsible to become the first to defend an attack?
Answer:
The first defender should usually be the player closest to the opponent holding possession, but needs to be at the defending side (goal side) of her in order to do an effective job.

Question:
As a first defender (remember?), what should I do in order to contain the attacker?
Answer:
The first defender's primary job is to contain the attacker. The first defender should usually be the player closest to the opponent holding possession, but needs to be at the defending side of him in order to do an effective job. He should keep a distance of about an arm's length, although the ideal distance will vary with each situation. The idea is to pressure the opponent as much as possible without giving her a large possibility of dribbling pass.
After the attacker is contained, the first defender should attempt a tackle. Often, however, this will increase the probability of being dribbled and passed.
